About Query-Free Freelancing
What is query-free freelancing?
Query-free freelancing is simply the act of making clients come to you–attracting attention from prospective clients by building your network, writer platform, and visibility.
Don’t I have to send queries if publications insist on it?
Only if you insist on writing for those specific publications. Yes, it might be nice to see your name in print in major magazines, but as a freelancer managing a career and not just your own vanity you need to balance that desire with earning a real and sustainable income. There is absolutely no reason you can’t use multiple approaches. The Query-Free Freelancer doesn’t teach you how to “get around” querying magazines necessarily, but instead focuses on showing you other styles, media, and markets and how you can make a very successful living without ever pitching a magazine (even while sometimes being published in them).
About Me
Who runs QueryFreeFreelancing.com?
That would be me! My name is Jennifer Mattern (call me Jenn). I’m a full-time blogger and freelance business writer, and I used to run a small online PR firm where I worked with creative and independent professionals and small business owners mostly (people just like you trying to build visibility for their products and services). I’m not new to blogging about freelance writing issues. You can find my primary blog, including M-F freelance writing jobs via email, at AllFreelanceWriting.com. If you’re more interested in the PR side of things, you’re welcome to check out my somewhat more snarky presence at NakedPR.com. Most of my freelance writing services are detailed at ProBusinessWriter.com. I run lots of other sites too, but you probably don’t care about them (and if you do, you’re always welcome to ask).
How can I contact you?
You’re welcome to contact me anytime to express your appreciation, adoration, annoyance (beware: I bite back), confusion, frustration, or I suppose to even ask me questions if you feel so inclined at jenn@queryfreefreelancer.com. I try to answer all serious inquiries from readers of any of my sites or blogs, but I can’t promise that I’ll be terribly swift about it.
The Site
How much does it cost to register?
Not a thing. It’s absolutely free, so register today!
Why should I register?
Because if you do, I’ll give you access to all kinds of free goodies. You’ll be able to read members-only posts and pages, and access members-only downloads that will help you build your own writer platform.
When I register do I, like, have to sell you my soul or something?
Not unless you really want to. I’m quite content with the souls of my two existing little minions, Baby and Tubs (names are the opposite of what you’d probably think).

When you register you do have to agree to occasionally receive email correspondence from me (yeah, I’m a stinker like that), but I don’t sell or rent your email address or other information, and you can unsubscribe later if you want to (you just won’t get advanced notice of my super-cool stuff anymore – that’s about all the emails will be for at the moment). You can always get the specifics by reading the full terms.
When I visit the site, how do I know if I’m already logged in or not?
If you’re not logged in, you’ll see a login form in the sidebar of the site (and you won’t be able to access any members-only resources). When you login, the form and green registration block in the sidebar will disappear.
When I login, it takes me to a strange admin screen. WTF?
It’s Wordpress. Love it.
If you want to get back to the front-end of the site, click the link at the top left. It says “The Query-Free Freelancer — Visit site.” But while you’re on the back-end, you can change your password to something you’ll remember easily (your initial password is auto-generated and emailed to you).
Why can’t I choose my own password when I register?
It’s Wordpress. Love it.
What if I lose my password?
If you’re logged out, there’s a password recovery link in the login box in the sidebar. Click it and good things will happen.
If you’re logged in, but you can’t remember it for later, go back to the admin area (to visit directly go to http://queryfreefreelancer.com/wp-admin) and change your password there.
How do I logout?
Just scroll to the bottom of the site and click the “Logout” link in the footer (the right-most link).
Why do you show unregistered users links to member downloads in the sidebar if they’re just going to get an error?
Because I’m a mean little tease. If I let you get a glimpse of what you’re missing, just maybe you’ll sign up and join the fun. Besides, it’s FREE! Sign up.
