I’m excited. Today was officially the first day of drafting The Query-Free Freelancer book. I previously finished the detailed outlining, but today the manuscript was setup, and I finally starting putting words to paper (okay, to laptop).
In light of that, I’ve decided to share some of the plans for the process.
As I mentioned in our last post, I haven’t decided if I really want to pursue traditional publishing avenues for the book, or if I’d rather self-publish. I’ll admit I’m leaning towards self-publishing due to the fact that I already have a strong promotional background and reasonably large built-in market. The only thing I’m absolutely certain of regarding the publishing at this point though is that I will not be pitching book proposals in a traditional way.
Instead, the book proposal (or an abbreviated version of it at least) will be made available here on the site, with the full proposal made available privately only to those who request it (agents / editors — not just anyone). I do have a marketing plan in place to use the platform to attract attention from the “right” people if I opt for that route. Basically, if I do work with a traditional publisher, it’s all going to be done in query-free style. Anything else would seem rather hypocritical.
The mini proposal will be published here after I’ve written at least a chapter or two. For the public version, full chapters won’t be published — excerpts will be.
Before the proposal is put on the site for all to see, I’ll be putting up the top-level TOC where registered members of the blog will have an opportunity to weigh in and let me know if there’s something not included that they’d like to see in the finished book. That will happen later this week. I’ll also be asking you what sections you want me to write early (so the excerpts can be released in that abbreviated proposal). In other words, you’re getting a say in how I write the book.
That’s where things stand right now — an unconventional approach perhaps, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

No matter what route you choose for the publishing of QFF, you are going to succeed beautifully. I look forward to hearing more about the book. Good luck dear.
Thank you very much Jessie.
The rough TOC will be going up in a little while for members only, so if you’re a member, remember to login and check that out to let me know if I’m forgetting anything you’d like the book to cover (and you can tell me what sections you think I should write first, to share excepts here).
No problem Jenn. Of course I am a member. I always forget to log in, you already have such great content.
What an amazing project. It will produce phenomenal results for you – whichever way you end up publishing.
Sharing your methodology has given me renewed vision for my own major project – Writing a non-fiction instructional book for fiction writers. It will be the culmination of a huge amount of analysis, accumulated knowlwedge and practical application.
I needed the motivation to get started, so thanks Jenn – you’ve given it to me. I’ll get on it and hopefully get my content outline completed by the end of next week.
